Stryker and CMR Surgical announced a strategic alliance on October 12, 2026. Stryker plans a preferred-equity investment of about 400 million dollars, which the companies also state as 300 million pounds, in the Cambridge robotics firm. That investment, if it closes, includes an exclusive option for Stryker to buy all of CMR's remaining equity later, on the terms in the agreement. In the United States, Stryker would also become the exclusive sales agent for the Versius surgical robotics portfolio.

CMR would continue to develop the platform and to sell it in markets outside the United States. The companies say the alliance pairs CMR's soft-tissue robots and clinical experience with Stryker's hospital relationships and commercial reach. Nothing in the announcement is a finished deal. The investment, the option, and the sales arrangement still depend on regulatory approvals and the other closing conditions. Until those are met, the US sales plan for Versius is an agreement on paper.

Why it matters

A large medtech company is buying distribution, and an option on the rest of a surgical robotics startup.
