Anthropic said on October 18, 2026, in a post on its own site, that it is setting aside part of its equity for a new entity called the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund. If stockholders approve, 5% of the company's shares go in now. The board can then add another 2% each time the company's value climbs 50% above a baseline that has not yet been made public.
The fund is set up as a wholly owned LLC instead of a 501(c)(3) charity, which Anthropic says gives it room to switch between different kinds of giving, such as large gifts to established nonprofits or payments sent directly to particular groups of people. One focus it names is the effect of AI on jobs, an area where it has already pledged $200 million. Anthropic says none of the fund's equity will pay for lobbying or political donations in the US or anywhere else.
The company frames this as an alternative to the escalating stock awards tech firms often give executives. Together with its co-founders' pledge to give away 80% of their holdings and an employee donation match used by about half of staff, Anthropic puts the total share dedicated to public causes at roughly 20%. It promises more detail on governance and the valuation milestones in the coming months.
Why it matters
One of the biggest AI labs is tying a growing slice of its future value to public causes, including help for workers hit by AI, which sets a new bar for how frontier labs share their gains.
