Engadget reported on October 19, 2026 that Google researchers have published a paper showing a team of four Gemini 4 Argon agents finishing Minecraft by defeating the Ender Dragon, without any person stepping in. The agents were dropped into a randomly generated survival world with only that goal. Nobody gave them roles, strategies or game-specific tools. Each one steered a player through Mineflayer, an open-source library, and they talked through in-game chat and a shared memory.
The agents split the work on their own. One focused on making tools, another gathered food and supplies, one lit a key portal, and another built shelters and struck the final blow. They also warned each other about threats, shared coordinates and picked up items from teammates who died. The whole run took about 27 hours, mostly spent on the dragon fight, during which the team wrote and ran 2,783 programs, sent 229 messages and died 605 times.
A fifth agent acted as an independent observer to check for cheating and publish reports. The run used 1.35 billion input tokens and cost $810 at Gemini's list price, or $1,620 at the standard price. The researchers say it is, to their knowledge, the first fully autonomous completion of the game by AI agents using only the standard Mineflayer library.
Why it matters
It is a concrete public test of long-running, multi-agent coding work, the same skills companies want from AI agents on real software and business tasks.
