HCLTech and Rapidus Corporation, a Japanese company developing advanced logic semiconductors, have officially opened two HCLTech development centers in India, located in Bengaluru and Hubli, dedicated to supporting Rapidus' semiconductor engineering needs.
The centers will provide Rapidus with a range of semiconductor engineering capabilities, including mask design, design infrastructure, process design kit development, design technology co-optimization, and layout design. HCLTech will also work with Rapidus to build a pipeline of Indian engineering talent to help meet Rapidus' evolving talent requirements in Japan.
Rapidus CEO Atsuyoshi Koike said the partnership gives the company access to India's growing pool of semiconductor engineering talent and dedicated development capabilities that complement its operations in Japan, as it works to establish next-generation semiconductor manufacturing in Japan. HCLTech CEO C Vijayakumar described the partnership as reflecting growing strategic collaboration between Japan and India, aimed at accelerating chip adoption and compressing time-to-market. HCLTech reported consolidated revenues of $14.8 billion for the 12 months ending September 2026.
Why it matters
It's part of a broader trend of chipmakers building distributed engineering talent pipelines outside their home countries to scale up advanced semiconductor development.
