General Compute, a cloud infrastructure startup focused on AI inference, has raised $100 million in a Series A round led by Blackbird and Abstract Ventures, with participation from Fuse Venture Partners, Village Global, and others, putting its post-money valuation at $800 million. The round comes as rivals in the broader neocloud sector face pressure, with analyst firm Gartner predicting up to 80% of neoclouds could disappear by the end of the decade.
General Compute's CEO, Finn Puklowski, said he is not worried about broader industry fears, arguing concerns about a chip industry collapse are overstated given the demand his company sees. Unlike most neoclouds, General Compute buys only inference-specific chips, from makers including Cerebras Systems, SambaNova Systems, and Positron AI, rather than general-purpose GPUs, and it rents data center space rather than building its own.
The company previously raised $400 million in debt financing in July, most of it still unspent. It says it has over 75 megawatts of capacity planned for next year and has already signed one deal expected to bring in over $100 million in annual recurring revenue, though its first large-scale chip deployments won't go live until the first quarter of next year.
Why it matters
A fresh $100 million raise for an inference-focused cloud, even as analysts warn most neoclouds may fail, shows investors still see room for specialized players betting on inference demand over general GPU capacity.
