Deepgram announced it is acquiring Daily, the company behind Pipecat, described as the world's most popular open-source voice agent framework. Deepgram says the combination gives it the first complete, open, production-grade platform for conversational voice AI, pairing Daily's real-time network infrastructure with Deepgram's own speech models and Pipecat's orchestration layer.

Pipecat will stay fully open source under its existing BSD V2 license, and Deepgram and the community are setting up an independent Pipecat Foundation. Daily co-founder Kwindla Hultman Kramer joins Deepgram as Head of Open Source, and the rest of the Daily team is joining Deepgram as part of the deal.

At its inaugural Deepgram Speak event, the company also introduced the Real-Time Context Standard (RCS), an open protocol co-developed with the Pipecat team that carries audio context, such as tone, who is speaking, or background noise, across a conversation between different AI models, rather than losing it when only the words get passed along. Deepgram also previewed a forthcoming Voice Agent Platform and two new models built for live conversation, with more technical details promised on its blog following the keynote.

Why it matters

Keeping the widely used Pipecat framework open source while folding in Daily's infrastructure could shape how developers build production voice AI agents going forward.
