Gemini app can now generate, preview and edit files in chat

Google has added the ability to generate, preview, and edit documents, PDFs, presentations, spreadsheets, and code directly inside the Gemini app chat. Users can expand a file to full screen to type edits directly, highlight text to ask questions about it, or ask Gemini to refine the file further.

Google gives an example of uploading handwritten lecture notes and asking Gemini to turn them into a PDF study guide, which can then be manually edited, have specific sections highlighted for Gemini to revise, or be used as the basis for follow-up questions.

PDF preview and editing works on both web and mobile. Other formats, including Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, Markdown files, TXT files, and code, are supported on the web only for now. Google says these capabilities are now available to all users in every language where the Gemini app is offered.

Why it matters

Letting users generate and directly edit real file formats inside chat removes a step developers and other users previously had to do in separate apps.
