Google says its Project Suncatcher prototype satellite, launched October 1, 2026 with partner Planet on SpaceX's Transporter-18 rideshare mission, has returned its first AI-generated response from space. After weeks of commissioning checks, including powering up the satellite's host and TPU trays, the team reached what it calls its "Hello World" milestone.
During a ground-station pass, Google uplinked a prompt to an onboard Gemma 4 open model asking it to write a haiku about being in space. As the satellite passed Svalbard, Norway, the downlinked poem confirmed the system worked. The team then tested limericks and telemetry prompts reporting the payload's technical status.
Google says the next step is testing how the onboard TPUs hold up under thermal stress and radiation in orbit, working toward a 2027 milestone of two interconnected satellites. The project is a long-term research effort exploring whether AI computing can be run from space.
Why it matters
It's an early, concrete test of whether data-center-class AI chips can actually operate and compute in orbit.
