The European Commission launched the European Chip Design Platform on November 4, 2026, a key initiative under the EU Chips Act. The Commission says the platform will mobilize 525 million euro to support a new generation of European chip design companies, particularly start-ups and small and medium-sized businesses.

The platform aims to give these companies access to resources that are normally the most expensive and hardest to obtain early on, including chip design tools, intellectual property blocks, design support services, and manufacturing capacity. Executive Vice-President Henna Virkkunen, who launched the project, said it gives chip start-ups and SMEs the support they need.

The Commission noted that European chip-design firms currently account for less than 1% of global revenue in that segment, and argued that new European chip manufacturing capacity will only be sustainable if European design firms generate enough demand for it. The press release did not provide a breakdown of how the 525 million euro will be allocated or a timeline beyond the launch date.

Why it matters

The funding targets a weak spot in Europe's chip industry, design, that the Commission says must grow for new manufacturing capacity to pay off.
