The Elec reported on November 7, citing industry sources from the day before, that Hyundai Motor has finalized the battery specification for Boston Dynamics' Atlas humanoid robot and chosen Samsung SDI and LG Energy Solution as its suppliers. Each Atlas unit will use 70 cylindrical 2170-format cells rated at 5,000 mAh each, adding up to a pack of roughly 1.3 kWh. Because production capacity is currently limited, Samsung SDI is expected to supply nearly all of the early volume. According to the report, a typical humanoid robot runs for about two to four hours on a charge, and the pack would be enough to power an efficient household refrigerator for more than a day. Hyundai Motor has given responsibility for Atlas to its parts subsidiary Hyundai Mobis. The Elec says mass production of Atlas is planned for 2028 or later, and that Boston Dynamics' Spot 2 robot, which uses the same 2170 cells, will be tested first.

Why it matters

Battery supply and runtime are practical bottlenecks for humanoid robots doing real shifts of work, and locking in cells and suppliers is a concrete step toward building Atlas at scale.
